July Review Round-Up

Okay, let's start with the big one - Resonance has been in production for about 6 years, and has had the AGS community holding its breath for all that time.  The game is now out and yes, it was worth the wait.  4 playable characters, some excellent puzzles including characters having to work together, a good sci-fi thriller plot, nice graphics and music, quality voice acting.   Not easy but not overly difficult either.  The only negative for me was the occasional use of profanity, which I felt was unnecessary, but that aside Resonance is a game that all adventure game fans will want in their collection.  Even better than Gemini Rue?  Both are excellent, but I'd probably have to say Resonance is better overall.

The Promised Land is an attempt to mix the time-management and real-time strategy genres.  Although there is much about it that is enjoyable, unfortunately the lack of some of the most basic interface features of RTS games - the inability to rubber-band multiple units and the lack of a zoom facility - mean that it really is only going to appeal to casual game players, and frustrate RTS fans (of which I am one) too much to keep them playing.

Dirk Dashing 2 is a very polished platformer that's designed to be completely family-friendly - this isn't at the expense of exciting gameplay however, it just means that, for instance, our special agent fires tranquliser darts instead of bullets.  with comic-book cut scenes, good visuals and sound, and tons of gameplay, this is one you'll be playing for a long time if you like platformers.  I enjoyed it quite a bit even though it's not really my genre.

I'm Free (Soy Libre) is a freeware adventure game based around a slave ship crashing in a universe where there is almost complete polarity of the ruling and serving classes.  It's short and not too difficult, has a couple of clever puzzles, and deals with its subject in an interesting way.  There is no voice pack in English (only Spanish), and the English translation isn't great, but at least you know what it means.  It's not amazing but sci-fi adventure gamers this is a pleasant short diversion.

Now a couple from the AGS Bake Sale that I should have blogged about ages ago:

The Rail - Technocrat has shown his ability to create a game that makes you feel like you're discovering a small part of a living futuristic world before with his TechnoBabylon games, and he does the same here - the plot involving terrorism is relevant to today's world, but it feels like there's a whole universe out there outside of what you see in the game.  Slick and satisfying, even though it's short.

Barn Runner: The Rich Dame Who Cut The Cheese is set in a mad dystopian world, in a particularly crazy city in which it is always Friday.  Since it's a detective story the game is very wordy, a little too much so at times, but it's quite a fun story.  There's a fair bit of innuendo even without the "naughty mode" turned on.  It even comes with a director's commentary, which is quite cool.
